i realise a little more with every class that every penny i earn from now on will likely be spent on some or other piece of camera equipment. every lens we were introduced to at our last class sounded essential. i’m pretty sure i need at LEAST; a portrait lens, a telephoto lens, a macro lens, 2 ultra wide angle lenses and a fish eye lens as a cherry on the top (and that’s just to start). i haven’t told my husband what lenses cost, i just said “expensive”. for now i’ll have to be content with my little 18mm – 55mm “kit lens”.

a friend recently asked me to describe myself in a few words. i said “commitment-phobe-but-recently-married, adventurer. i am constantly looking for ways to quench my thirst for change and new experiences. my latest exploration comes in the form of photography. i’m a noob at it. if you don’t think photography really classifies as “hard-core”, wait till you hear the jargon.

In essence that was the question put to me today. Let me explain. I get a kick out of working on a photographic shops floor or behind the counter every now and then. I’m not quite sure what it is that drives me to this insanity – in the view of some – but I think it is enlightening to be on the other side of the counter from time to time and face the heat or questions of the consumer.

Yesterday was such a day and one where the question of “Which camera do I buy?” or more specifically “Which Nikon do I buy?” got me thinking a fair bit.

Not many of us will have the luxury of being in a position of trying to decide what to buy where we can put a Nikon D3s on our list for consideration, and had I been dependent on the outcome of this sale for my survival I may have been more biased, but in reality, there is a question to be asked that is truly relevant. Does the Nikon D3s warrant the extra, nearly double the price premium it has over the D700?

We have just got our hands on the new Sony Alpha A290 and A390 for review which does mean – as we want to have it in the June issue of the magazine – that we wont be publishing the magazine till later this week, but we thought we would give you a heads up of what has changed between these two cameras and their predecessors.

What Sony have done is reduce the entry level range from 3 models (A230, 330 and 380) to just the two (A290 & A390) In essence both cameras are the same, featuring 14mp CCD sensors. The only real difference is that the A390 sports live-view with a tilt screen which the A290 lacks. The make or break of these cameras though is if Sony have addressed the design of the Grip which was a deal breaker on the previous range. “So have they?” I hear you ask… well, you will need to wait for the full review in the magazine later this week, all I can say for now is yes and no.
