Greg W - Admin

You may know me better as 'Admin', as I work more behind the scenes to keep PhotoComment running smoothly, so here is a short history of how I got here. I started working in a camera store right out of high school having never picked up a camera before. I spent a few years working there and then moved to wholesale and then made a big change and went into the cycling industry for a few years, however I could not stay away and made the move back into the photography industry and have been working with PhotoComment since March 2008. It has become a passion and a labor of love to bring the best photographic content to you.

Picking up the Canon EOS 600D for the first time I was pleasantly surprised. I was not expecting much from the 600D, it being just a step up from entry level in the Canon range. The camera is comfortable to hold and will be familiar to anyone who has used Canon before.

A while ago we brought you a review of the GoldenPic Lite App for Android. Last week we received the link to the new iPhone version of this app, which is now available on the App Store for $4.99.

The concept of the app is still the same, pick a location and the app will tell you when the golden hour for photography is. ie When is the best time to take photos at that location. Continue reading »

So, you have a bunch of photos you want to resize to email or upload to a website. (PhotoComment’s Photo Friday Competition for example) However you don’t have access to PhotoShop or the like and need to do them in a hurry. Well here is a simple yet often overlooked method for quickly resizing your photos on any PC.

I have to start off by saying that I am not a big fan of small video cameras. They are generally either too small to hold comfortably and are always too basic for my liking. Enter the Samsung Q10BP. At first I thought this would be just another small video camera that is going to annoy me, but I was pleasantly suprised. This Samsung camcorder is comfortable to use and has just enough manual functionality to keep me happy.

So what makes one SD card better than another one. The brand? Is the brand name just something you pay extra for like in many other cases? Speed? What makes one card faster than another one? Reliability? Is one card more reliable than another one? What about the effect on your camera’s battery life?

Sony have launched a very nice LCD screen that can be used as a monitor screen while shooting HD video with any camera that has an HDMI output. This 5” monitor comes with 2 mount adapters to allow you to fit it onto a Sony Hotshoe or onto the Standard type Hotshoe that the other camera manufacturers use. The mount attaches to the screen via a standard ¼” tripod thread so that the screen can be mounted to any tripod, stand or bracket that has this standard screw attachment.

It was great to see such a big turn out for the Potch Studio Workshop organised by Emil Wessels and Graham Robertson Photographic. A great time was had by all who attended and many many photographs were taken. It sometimes felt like we were at a rave with the amount of flashes firing at the same time.

PhotoComment is running a competition for the attendees of this workshop. Below you will find a link to download the PhotoShop template for the cover of PhotoComment Magazine. You can use this template to create your own limited edition cover of PhotoComment. Use the guidelines provided to create your cover and submit it to the Photo Gallery which will be open from Tuesday 10 May. Check this post again for the link once the gallery is open.

We look forward to seeing how you did!

The gallery will be open for entries until 31 May 2011 and voting will be open until 30 June 2011.

This week’s Photo Friday winner is Lianvh with one of a series of bird shots. Well Done!

We held our February PhotoWalk in the ‘City of Love’ Parys, in the Free State unfortunately not France. However there are a few things that can be said for Parys over Paris, there are more Eiffel Towers, although they may not be as grand, and the river is far more impressive and does not smell so bad.

Please head over to the Gallery Page for this Photo Walk. Included there are the entries and winners in the competition held for the best image of the day. Epson sponsored the printing and we printed each participant’s best image from the day and judged the images and award a prize of the book Photo Recipes. A great guide to taking better photos.

Over the next 24-48 hours our servers will be undergoing an upgrade. While we hope that there will be no major interruptions in our service there may be times that the website is not fully functional. We apologise for any inconvenience and hope that the upgrade will improve future visits to PhotoComment.

A very big thank you to all the photographers who came out to the second PhotoComment Photo Walk which was held last saturday in the Pretoria CBD. Although the weather didn’t look as though it was going to cooperate we gathered outside at Capello’s outside the State Theatre and then set off in a light drizzle. After a while the sun came out and all was well.

Fuji sponsored the walk with Disposable camera’s so we each tried our hand at getting a perfect shot with a disposable camera where you have absolutely no control over exposure. The best image from the disposable camera will win a R250 voucher to use at a Foto First store. We will have the films processed (no they are not digital) and scanned and put them in the gallery later today. Should be interesting.
A great time was had by all. Head over to the PhotoWalk Gallery page here to view the images from the walk or upload your images from the walk.

The next PhotoComment Photo Walk will be on 12 February 2011 in the ‘City of Love,’ well kind of, Parys. Watch photocomment.net for more details.

The Drift Innovation X170 Action Camera is cool. Lets just start there. It is a camera for shooting whatever it is you happen to be doing at the time. Quite literally if you can think of something extreme you want to make a video of the X170 can capture it for you.

The first thing I noted when opening the box was all the accessories. It comes standard with handlebar, helmet and goggle mounts as well as the necessary usb and video cables for viewing your awesome footage. The cherry on top is the remote control for stopping and starting the recording. It can attach to a

A big Thank You to all of you who joined us for the first PhotoComment Photo Walk. A great time was had by all.

We have created a gallery specifically for this event and would love to see your images uploaded there. Please resize your images to 1024×768 before uploading and remember to only upload the images on the PhotoWalk page and not to the user gallery as images from the PhotoWalk will not be considered for the Photo Friday competition.

Head over to the 04 December 2010 Photo Walk Page to see the images or upload your images from the Photo Walk.
