… in this city is a progression of Magagane’s previous series Light Hours which explored urban spaces in the city of Johannesburg from the perspective of inner city rooftops, seen at night. In his new body of work his encounters take a more intimate perspective, of the momentary aspects of ordinary life in Johannesburg. It is here that Magagane captures the brief encounters, transitory instants, fragments of narratives.  Continue reading »

Photographers give this some thought today:

Dear Photographer taking my family’s pictures today.

All people are unique. All Families are different.  Please don’t make us pose unnaturally to our natures.  My toddler does not sit still and pulls faces when he does – you’ll need to be prepared for that.

We are not just some other family you are taking pictures of today.  We have individual relationships that we express between us  - please honor and try to capture those.

I do not want my family photo’s to look like the Smith family shots you did last week, last month or last year.  I don’t mind if you try one thing new and experiment to get the best pics of my family.  A balance of professionalism and ingenuity please.

Please communicate with me about what my expectations are and what your capabilities are.

I think thats all – I ought to still leave you with the creative license.  So please be creative.

Love from Your Client (who knows a bit about the visual arts)

Growing up in South Africa I have seen way, way, way too many wildlife pictures.  I detest them.  One lion picture looks like them all.  Dry grass and lion. Dry grass and bush pig.  Muddy buffalo stares you down.  Spots in tree equals Leopard.  I yawn before I’ve even open a wildlife calendar. Because of my attitude I’ve probably missed quite a few good shots in the past few years.

I received an email this week which captured a unique African wildlife moment. I was excited to read about it and get the photographers name.  No name.  That got me mad.  Who published this without the photographer’s name?  I tell you who. It was the kind of person that goes up to a photographer and tells them their camera takes good pictures.  Being only in the very beginning stages of pursuing photography I would love a camera like that!  Sadly I have handled and used top of the range professional cameras, because of my association (by marriage) with PhotoComment, and my photos may come out crystal clear but still horribly boring.

This was a rare moment to catch in the wild so please if you know the photographer let me know – I’d like to pair the photographer back with the photograph.

UPDATE 17 Mar 2010! We were contacted by Chad Cocking who took the photograph, see his comments below.
