A few weeks ago, I wrote about a creative block. I wrote about a few ideas I had to help me find my “Mojo”. I thought it time I write a follow up on what I have been up to since my journey to find the infamous “Mojo” started.
I have been keeping a journal of my journey on my blog, but I will highlight a few things here.
I have been the lucky winner of a creative block. For some time I have felt that my photography has been stagnating and getting decidedly boring. I know that I don’t stand alone. It is not uncommon for people to feel uninspired. To be honest, I am not sure where I lost my way. It dawned on me the other day that I need to get my act together, find my ‘mojo’, and get back on track.
‘Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It’ is another brilliant addition to the Scott Kelby book collection. Those who are familiar with the acclaimed author know that his books are always detailed, informative, and useful.
My first impression (when I looked at the caption on the cover: “Learn Step By Step How to Go from Empty Studio to Finished Image”) was: “This is going to take me forever to get through!” I was mistaken. There are plenty of pictures! After all; what use is a book if there are no pictures in it?
The inspiration for this article comes from another that I recently read and identified with. I have had many conversations with people in the photographic, as well as many other industries related thereto. All of them came back to me with the result that the nail was hit on its flat, round head: time thieves are everywhere.
I have been going into each space in my head to find some ideas for an article. I have certainly taken my merry time in getting down to finding something to write. For someone who usually has so much to say, I was, for once, at a loss for words. While on a photowalk a past Sunday, it all came together. I thought I should dedicate my next article to ‘The Joburg Photowalkers’, a group that has fast gained popularity amongst the photographic community.
We seem to love the cloudless, sunny days, the ones that are hellish hot. When we are at the beach, our smiles fade away as the clouds come over because that is just not beach weather. What I did realise on a recent trip to the Coast is that the cloudy, stormy looking days were the best. Not only were they the least windy of the lot, but the weather made for some pretty awesome photo taking. I love the natural sky props and will often try and incorporate some of it into my images if I am able to. Sometimes the time of the day seems to make this difficult. I suppose I should try harder. (insert LOL).
One of my favourite things to do is watch people. I like to observe them, inspect and sometimes, on the rare occasion, even listen to them (that said in a very tongue and cheek manner). One of the things I like to get is opinions; we are always entitled to them and I am always interested in getting other views on things.
After reading Sfiso’s article on ‘The Unwelcome Camera‘, I wanted to write a follow on from a slightly different perspective. I experienced something unusual while having breakfast at a popular coffee shop. Those who know me, know that I capture my days in pictures. I do this so I can have something to help me remember what used to make me tick when I was young and did more than read the paper on a Sunday.
