Today is World Photography day, so go out today and take at least one photo of something or someone special you love, even if it just taken on a camera phone, you’ll be contributing to celebrating a very special day indeed. Can you even begin to image a world without a photograph in it? We can often take them for granted but a world without photos of your wedding day, your child’s first steps and family holidays would just not be the same.

This past Saturday we had a last minute photowalk – arranged on Facebook, a good reason to like our page. We met at 6am, before the sun rose, on a chilly Johannesburg winter morning at Emmarentia Dam. With mostly new faces, and lots of excitement to warm us up it landed up being a fantastic day in spite of the chill. A big thank you to all that made it. Instead of creating a specific gallery for this event we would invite those who attended to upload their best images from the day to the Photos For Hope Gallery.

Tonight is the opening of the first Lomography Embassy store in South Africa and we will be heading their to cover it. It’s located in Shop 7, 70 Juta Stree, Braamfontein, Johannesburg. If you haven’t looked at Lomo before be sure to pass by this store.

We are here at the SanDisk event for South Africa. The discussion has begun around how they began flash memory. 10% of their revenue from last year came from their patented intellectual property from manufactures like Toshiba, Samsung etc. They have over 2100 patents world wide in flash memory technology.

SanDisk has not been effect by physical damage from the earthquake, they have however been impacted by the electricity issue as production requires consistent power supply. We will share more as the evening continues.

[UPDATE]

There is talk about the growth of Interchangeable Lens market, expected to grow over the next 2 year at 28% largely due to the mirrorless camera growth. In testing the standard SanDisk blue SD card (entry level) took twice as long as an Extreme card did to record 10 images from an Olympus PEN to the card.

By 2018 high end DSLR cameras will require CF cards with read write speeds of up to 700MB/sec. Compact flash only represents 10% of card sales but a very important market for SanDisk.

Lots of tech chat now about Quad die cores, Intelligent processing and durability etc. Looking forward to the demonstration part of the event. In the end SanDisk claims what sets them apart is the integrated management of not only the memory but creation of the controller chips in the cards.

Devinda Europe is going to demo the benefits of SanDisk now. Will update as appropriate soon.

It was great to see such a big turn out for the Potch Studio Workshop organised by Emil Wessels and Graham Robertson Photographic. A great time was had by all who attended and many many photographs were taken. It sometimes felt like we were at a rave with the amount of flashes firing at the same time.

PhotoComment is running a competition for the attendees of this workshop. Below you will find a link to download the PhotoShop template for the cover of PhotoComment Magazine. You can use this template to create your own limited edition cover of PhotoComment. Use the guidelines provided to create your cover and submit it to the Photo Gallery which will be open from Tuesday 10 May. Check this post again for the link once the gallery is open.

We look forward to seeing how you did!

The gallery will be open for entries until 31 May 2011 and voting will be open until 30 June 2011.

We are here at the full day studio workshop in Potchefstroom. The day has just begun but already things are off to a busy start. There are seven setup in total and this is just the first one of the lot. The beginners are in this group we are following at the moment. We have covered the basics of studio lights, etiquette etc. Lots of excitement.

This is a great initiative and you will see some of the images in the May issue of PhotoComment Magazine. In essence, this is a program for photographers to give back to those who cannot afford the service – or the printing – of a professional portrait image. CODP will be runnning a workshop where you can find out more on 14 May 2011, find more details here. To learn more about their goals for this years project read the press release after the break.

We were at the free Anton Hammerl demonstration in Johannesburg today. It was attended by his family and friends with many other photographers like Jodi Bieber, Kim Ludbrook and Antoine de Ras.

It was interesting to chat to some of the other photo journalists there and get their feelings on working in conflict areas etc.

Yesterday we got this fantastic email from the Sunflower Fund which – if you are not aware of already through their National Bandana Day initiative – raises funds for the South African Bone Marrow Registry to help test bone marrow donors and build the registry. A new initiative they are launching this year is “Photo for Hope”. In a nutshell, photographers can donate prints of their best work to be sold to raise funds for the Sunflower Fund. We fully support this initiative. Click on the banner above to learn more.
