The May 2012 Photocomment Magazine is out on the web and being delivered to stores today.  Mine was delivered to my pillow an hour ago and what a perfect excuse to stay in bed a little longer while reviving my inspiration reserves for life and photography.

In this issue the March theme decathlon winners are announced.  The Professional Portfolio features photographers Ashley Cooper & Filip Cederholm in their international quest to highlight charitable causes.  Learn more about food photography or just ache with hunger at the photographs like me.

Then prepare to drool.  I always drool over a Hasselblad they just look so pro.  Natalie Field uses a Hasselblad for a day with cover worthy photographic results.

Read about a company rescuing film.

Colourful portraits fill the Reader’s Portfolio with Jackie Hulme’s work.  She has a talent for capturing personality and culture with dramatic backgrounds.

Oh and the products reviewed are:

Review of  Canon 28mm f2.8 IS USM & 24mm F2.8 IS USM

Review of Lexar UDMA7 1000x Compact Flash & USB 3.0 Card Reader

Our April 2012 issue of PhotoComment Magazine is out on shelves and is also live on the site. It has a great mix of informative and perhaps controversial content. Kicking off with Armani’s Editor’s Comment that tackles the issue of using a professional model over willing relatives, friends etc. Then you can dive into some examples of the entries in the “Scapes” theme of our Photo Decathlon. Remember, entries close for this theme at the end of this month. We have a Pro Portfolio by Shayne Robinson before diving into the techniques to better cellphone photographs (the May theme in the Decathlon). Cast your eyes on a new Koos van der Lende panoramic and the story behind it. We look at a handful of the top smart phone apps for your photographic pleasure before being taken on a game drive with the fantastic images of Darred Joubert in our Reader’s Portfolio. In the review section, you will find a group review of some of the top smart phones we have played with, as well as the Sony NEX-7 with Zeiss 24mm f/1.8. We also share our first impressions of the Canon EOS 5D Mk III (our apologies for publishing it with an incorrect image). The Final Comment looks at the use of smart phones with apps like Instagram in photo journalism.

Remember to give us your feedback on the magazine. If you are looking for a print stockist, check the list here. We are working on something special for subscribers which, if you wish to be a part of, you can subscribe here. Lastly, read the magazine online. Before we dive inside this issue, please accept my apologies for the several typos that crept into this edition. There were more distractions and interuptions than usual in October which had a major impact on our deadline and with a slight bit of dislexia on my side there were some spelling mistakes that slipped through to print which should not have. I promise to be more “Discilpined” in future :-) sorry Eric Palmer.

It just dawned on me that we did not share that the October issue of PhotoComment Magazine is live here on the site and is also in stores. Just to let you know that the Google Map with our stockists of the magazine has been updated. You should be able to find the magazine in these stores each month.

We have been overwhelmed at the response to the launch of PhotoComment Magazine in print just over a month ago. As you know we have tried to get the magazine out as far and wide as we possibly can but even then its not possible to get it everywhere.

With this in mind – and encouraging emails from you our readers – we have launched a subscription offer for PhotoComment’s print magazine to cater to both South African and international readers.

You can subscribe for one year by clicking on the SHOP tab at the top and adding to cart the R120.00 South African subscription or the R360.00 (approximately US$50.00 at time of writing) for the international subscription.

You will see that there is no charge for the actual magazine, the cost is purely to cover packaging and postage of the magazine each month.

We hope this helps those of you looking for the magazine in hard copy and struggling to get it in a store near you. We may even run a subscriber competition or give away soon – don’t worry you don’t have to wait till then to subscribe and qualify, you will be eligible for the duration of your subscription.

If you haven’t been following us on Twitter, the January 2011 edition is our second edition to go to print and is already in stores in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Cape Town should have it next week. In the mean time, here is a map listing all the stores with the January edition so far. It makes it a bit easier than trying to type out a list with addresses etc. You can also read the latest issue online as it has been since day one.

After launching as the first online flip page photography magazine of its kind in South Africa in March 2009, PhotoComment will from the 1st December 2010 be available in print as a free publication through several photographic retailers and colleges.

“There is no doubt in my mind that some may consider this a step backwards” said PhotoComment’s founder, Tristan Hall. “The decision to move to print was not one we rushed into. There had been calls from several areas to consider PhotoComment going to print due to the nature of its content being image related as well as certain limits that still exist for many potential readers in broadband Internet connectivity.”
