Review: GoldenPic for iPhone

A while ago we brought you a review of the GoldenPic Lite App for Android. Last week we received the link to the new iPhone version of this app, which is now available on the App Store for $4.99.

The concept of the app is still the same, pick a location and the app will tell you when the golden hour for photography is. ie When is the best time to take photos at that location.

In the full version there are 5 different ways to select your location. Current Location, Map Search, Address Search, Longitude\Latitude and Saved Locations. Using saved locations allows you to quickly pull up the information for your favourite photo spots. You are also able to email the information on the selected location directly from the app.

Aside from being able to choose any location you can then also choose any date in the future, allowing you to plan ahead.

The app supplies you with the following information.
Date
Location: Coordinates and Address
Sunrise: Blue Hour Begin Time
Sunrise Time
Golden Hour End Time
Sunset: Golden Hour Begin Time
Sunset Time
Blue Hour End Time
Moon: Moonrise Time
Moonset Time
Moon Phase
Weather: Expected Temp and Weather Conditions

So why is this app important? Or What exactly is Golden Hour and Blue Hour?

From Wikipedia, “In photography, the golden hour (sometimes known as magic hour) is the first and last hour of sunlight during the day, when a specific photographic effect is achieved due to the quality of the light.”

The term hour is used quite loosely as the the duration of this period varies by location and time of year. Essentially during the first and last hour of sunlight the light from the sun is travelling through more of the earth’s atmosphere making it softer and giving it a golden appearance. Also because the sun is low on the horizon shadows are longer. All this works together to make photographs taken at this time quite spectacular.

Blue Hour on the other hand is the period of time directly before sunrise and after sunset mostly referred to as twilight when there is neither full daylight or complete darkness.

Knowing when these times are will help you plan and be able to get the desired results by knowing what time you need to be up.

You may know me better as 'Admin', as I work more behind the scenes to keep PhotoComment running smoothly, so here is a short history of how I got here. I started working in a camera store right out of high school having never picked up a camera before. I spent a few years working there and then moved to wholesale and then made a big change and went into the cycling industry for a few years, however I could not stay away and made the move back into the photography industry and have been working with PhotoComment since March 2008. It has become a passion and a labor of love to bring the best photographic content to you.
