The May 2012 Photocomment Magazine is out on the web and being delivered to stores today.  Mine was delivered to my pillow an hour ago and what a perfect excuse to stay in bed a little longer while reviving my inspiration reserves for life and photography.

In this issue the March theme decathlon winners are announced.  The Professional Portfolio features photographers Ashley Cooper & Filip Cederholm in their international quest to highlight charitable causes.  Learn more about food photography or just ache with hunger at the photographs like me.

Then prepare to drool.  I always drool over a Hasselblad they just look so pro.  Natalie Field uses a Hasselblad for a day with cover worthy photographic results.

Read about a company rescuing film.

Colourful portraits fill the Reader’s Portfolio with Jackie Hulme’s work.  She has a talent for capturing personality and culture with dramatic backgrounds.

We apologize for the error in the image accompanying this article in our print edition

I admit that when the Canon EOS 5D Mark III was announced, I figured – for the price difference – one would be better off getting the older Mark II. On paper, sure there are some differences, but I doubt it would justify upgrading if you already have a Mark II. Then, last week, during a brief stop at Canon’s offices, I was given the Mark III to play with for a few minutes. I quickly realized that my thinking could be very wrong.

There has been little bits of news all over the web in the past week or so. Some of it bigger than others. Like Kodak filing for bankruptcy. It is sad to see a company which was actually rather innovative – after all they practically invented digital photography – fall because it was too scared to cannibalise itself in a time where their film products ruled the roost. Sad thing is, they could have owned the digital market and still had a profitable film business it seems. Read on for more on this and other stories.

This is quite likely the camera everyone has wanted from Canon for many years while still being the camera few people expected. It is a G-series on steroids. It features a 14.3MP CMOS sensor that is just a tiny bit smaller than the 1.6x crop APS-C sensor they use in much or their DSLR range. It is not the changeable lens, mirrorless machine many were expecting. Question is thought, for most photographers that this will appeal to, does it really need changeable lenses? Read on for the press release from Canon SA.

This morning saw the opening of the first Canon Expo in South Africa at the Sandton Convention Centre. One of the the star attractions at the show is the EOS C300 which was just recently announced. We got a minute long brief hands on with it in video for you if you read on. An interview with Roger Machin the EOS Product Manager will be up as soon as we possibly can. Also have a brief EOS-1D X hands on video coming shortly.

In case you have missed the updates on our Facebook Page or Twitter, the November issue of PhotoComment magazine is now out on the counters and shelves of photographic retailers, colleges and clubs across the country. You can also check it out online. We are pleased to announce that the magazine is now in testing for the iPad. If you would like to try it out please use this link but be aware it is still in testing, though we would like your feedback.

Before we dive inside this issue, please accept my apologies for the several typos that crept into this edition. There were more distractions and interuptions than usual in October which had a major impact on our deadline and with a slight bit of dislexia on my side there were some spelling mistakes that slipped through to print which should not have. I promise to be more “Discilpined” in future :-) sorry Eric Palmer.

The news is out and the Canon fans seem to be cheering this one on. Canon have merged the two models that always made up the top end 1D range into a single body, the EOS-1D X. The full frame, 18mp, monster is capable of shooting at 14fps in manual focus and 12fps in autofocus. In addition it also has an ISO range that tops out at ISO 204800 on the H2 setting. The camera also has a 61 point AF system and achieves it’s speed largely thanks to the Dual DIGIC 5+ processor. Get the full press release here.

Look, up there on top that Canon! Is it a flash? Is it a video? No its the Canon Speedlite 320EX. More powerful than your pop up flash gun. Able to shed a little video light on an otherwise dark subject. Capable of firing your camera like a remote control trigger. That’t right, this little flash has a built in remote control for your camera. The question is, does this Swiss Army like flash gun really work or does it have the potential to “go go gadget failure”.

Picking up the Canon EOS 600D for the first time I was pleasantly surprised. I was not expecting much from the 600D, it being just a step up from entry level in the Canon range. The camera is comfortable to hold and will be familiar to anyone who has used Canon before.

I really enjoy following David Hobby’s Strobist blog and today is one such illustration of why. The video above is one he posted and dives into it a bit here. I don’t think I have ever seen so many Canon bodies with so many flashes in one rig.

We got the following press release confirming the dates for the Canon South Africa Expo in December which also explains how the year end EOS Roadshow will be a part of the Expo. Press release after the break.

Well not quite. After the initial excitement that some had when this video went live, it turned out that it was part of a school project and not related to Canon in any way. Got people’s attention though. We couldn’t help but join in with all the other sites out there sharing this video at the moment. Its an interesting wishlist though.

We recently got this press release that Canon South Africa will be holding their own Canon Expo in Sandton come December 2011. It will be a 3 day event that can showcase their products and services best apparently. There is only one concern with this, it means that Canon SA wont be involved in any other expos or shows. That means no Canon at this years Photo & Film Expo… odd.

Let me introduce you to Tristan (popular name these days) Wrench, your typical teen who has completed his schooling and has taken a gap year to figure out whats next in his life. He’s into parkour, drama and has done some great video editing for us in the past. To help him fill his gap year we arranged for him to attend an Intermediate Photography Course at Vega. First things first though, we needed a camera and on a tight budget we thought we would look second hand. KAMERAZ held the answer.
