Recently, a friend and I found ourselves at Maponya Mall in Soweto. I had my Canon EOS 450D in a backpack and out of sight, while his EOS 40D was strapped around his neck and balanced proudly against his chest. While walking around, nothing caught our attention. However, the mere fact that my friend’s camera was in plain sight was enough to alert the attention of one of the security staff members. Continue reading »
We got this press release which may be of interest to our South African readers. Canon SA are bringing back their Road Shows later this year and they will be happening in Durban on 9 July 2011, Johannesburg 16 July 2011 and Cape Town 23 July 2011. You can get more details on venues and times in the press release after the break.
I can see the desperation in her body language, the years of habit stirring deep within her. In spite of the biting cold, she gingerly and determinly struck the match. The cold makes her shake, especially her arms and hands, as an icy breeze blew out the flame. Frustrated, she tried again, the match bursts into life and this time she ignores the shakes and quickly lights the cigarette loosely lodged at her lips. That first drag fills her with satisfaction, her eyes closed and the cold breeze forgotten like a distant thought… the addiction.

There seems to be a great deal of talk today about 2011 being the year in which PMA (which was rebranded as Cliq) wont happen. Word out today is that the annual event which usually happens in January or February each year – and which was scheduled for September following the Cliq rebranding – will now be tied in to the much bigger CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in 2012. This is a very interesting development. From an attention point of view, I have wondered over the last few years why they did not combine CES and PMA before. They were always a few weeks apart and camera manufactures were kind of expected to be at both and have something different to announce at each as well. But is there more to this story than meets the eye?
I recently posted about the Nissin Di622 Mark II flash that we received to review. Well last week was my first opportunity to take it out for a bit of an impromptu shoot with Tristan Wrench who first introduced us to the guys at Parkour SA. I got my hands on a Canon EOS 7D with 50mm f/1.4 thanks to the guys at Lens Rentals so we could check how well the new Nissin flash’s wireless system worked.
Let me state now that this is one of the few times I have enjoyed myself shooting for a review. This image was shot with the flash off to the cameras right on a self standing monopod (yes that is an oxymoron) and then imported to my iPad and processed using Photogene Pro. All of these things will be reviewed in the coming days and weeks, this is just a taster and part of my fulfilment of the promise I made earlier this year “to shoot and share” with you all, our readers. Feel free to leave your comments, I think I can take it.
Canon Rumors website have posted this bit of news on a new patent for what they are speculating is a Canon EF adapter for some future mirrorless camera. While I don’t doubt that as a possibility I cannot help but make a wild imaginative shot in the dark and say with Sony having released the specifications of the NEX mount rdcently, wouldn’t it be crazy if this was a Canon EF to Sony E-mount adapter that would offer full electronic compatibility with autofocus, apeture control and even image stabilization? Check the link for more.

We picked this up on Canon Rumours and thought we should pass it on. It seems there may be an issue with Canon’s EF-S 18-200mm IS lens. To quote from the service advisory:
We have discovered that some EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens products may have screws that come loose inside the lens and which may interfere with zoom operation of the lens.
You can get more details over at the Canon Rumours website here.
If you don’t know it already I am a big fan of David duChemin, hey we even punt his books and the Craft & Vision publishing that is his brain child. As one who has spent a great deal of time in sales and marketing in the photographic industry I cannot stand the ego that tends to follow brand bashing in photography. Do yourself a favour and read the post at the link below on David’s switch from Canon to Nikon and get the wisdom and sense he writes if you are stuck thinking you have the wrong brand or camera to improve your photography.

Its been a busy day for Canon. They have announced two new entry level DSLR cameras (EOS 600D and EOS 1000D) plus some more compacts, lenses and flashes. Lets get a brief overview shall we.
EOS 1100D
This is a 12MP CMOS camera with 720P video. It has a 9 point autofocus system with the EOS 7D colour metering system and a basic menu system that aims to simplify your first DSLR experience.
EOS 600D
At heart this is still the 18MP CMOS 550D but now with a tilt and swivel screen as in the EOS 60D plus wireless flash control as found in higher end models.
Well that is the gist of the question from reader Cas Pretorius following our recent Photo Tip on not rushing to buy new gear…
His question was: “I am currently looking at buying a specific body that has come down in price , basically because of the exchange rates etc. There is talk that the manufacturer may soon replace it (it’s been on the market for +- 2 years). If that happens, it is expected that the price of the current, then ‘old’ model, may come down even more, until all stock has been sold. My question (in light of this article by you) is this, namely is it wise to buy the older technology at a reduced price, instead of getting the new one, which will in any event be quite expensive due to the fact that it is new etc?”
I should have seen this coming having been down this road myself more than once. So what is the answer to Cas’ dilemma of wanting a body that is cheaper now than it was two years ago when it was launched and could very soon be replaced?
Canon have done some changing and updating to their A-series of PowerShot compacts. As with our Fuji update earlier today we will just give a brief summary here.
PowerShot A3300 IS and A3200 IS
With a 16MP sensor and 3inch display the A3300 IS is the bigger brother here sharing the same 28-140mm lens as the smaller A3200IS which boast 14MP and 2.7inch screen. Both record 720p HD video
PowerShot A2200 and A1200
The two bottom models, the A2200 goes slim by using a lithium rechargeable battery while the A1200 sticks to AA batteries that you need to take care of yourself. Both cameras have a 4x optical zoom, 14MP CCD and shoot 720p HD video.
Gerhardt Coetzee posted this video which may be of interest to some. Shot using the Canon EOS 5D mkII.

Welcome to the first of our Reader Q&As. To kick this feature off we going to answer a question from Tharina on which camera she should buy. Here is some of the information she gave us to help answer her question.
I am in search of good advice regarding an excellent digital camera brand and model, with exchangeable lenses preferably. I currently have a Pentax Optio 30 – 3.2 megapixel, 3 × optical zoom camera and enjoy shooting nature, outdoor, landscape, close-up macro photo’s, wildlife and travelling destinations… I really want to buy a camera that can last me quite a long time.
Canon have been busy today, introducing the new EOS 60D and a handful of lenses including: EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM, EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM, EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS II USM, EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM and if that is not enough, they announced development of new EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM plus an EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM.
Also announced earlier this wee was the successful development of an APS-H sized CMOS sensor with 120 megapixels – that is right 120mp. Read on for more details.
With Photokina fast approaching rumors of new cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony etc are running wild. In the meantime, the manufactures have announced some new products leading up to the show with several other brands expected to make announcements this week. While we can barely contain our excitement to share other news with you, for the time being we will have to restrain ourselves. While you wait with anticipation here are the latest releases from the past week or so.
