I must apologise for dropping the ball on this one. On 23 September 2011 I attended the opening of the College of Digital Photography Pretoria Campus. The new campus is located just off of Lynnwood drive in Pretoria East and is easy to get to. The new premises are modern and ready to roll. Their next Fundamentals of Digital Photography course kicks off on 8 October 2011. If you have been wanting to attend one of their courses but the other campuses were to far then this should be some very welcome news.
The September issue of the magazine is live you can jump straight into the magazine. The cover is by Torben Geve who is a Danish based photographer and is this month’s Pro Portfolio feature on Page 8.
We have all been invited to the College of Digital Photography’s open day next week friday, November 26th. PhotoComment will be there and hop to see all of you there too! We think this will be a great event!
i’m one of those irritating “artists” who doesn’t like showing off my work because of how critical i am of myself. seeing my photos in the photo comment mag however, kind of made me go…”hang on a sec, this feels pretty awesome”. i need to keep sharing. i need to open myself up to an onslaught of crits or praise and be equally gracious about feedback in both categories, instead of brushing off any compliments…
…so, i went ahead and uploaded a few of my recent images. as you might notice i have played around with editing a bit:

for some reason i have noticed that some photographers try not to divulge where their photo-shopping (or in my case “gimping”) has helped the creative process.
why?
personally, i think that’s a bit narrow minded. you need a great image before you even begin your editing. editing can enhance a fantastic image. if we carry on trying to hide any editing, we start to become like those people who say “photographers aren’t artists because the camera does everything”.
WHAT!?
exactly.
as a photographer, you preconceive the image. you make the photo in your head before the shutter comes down. and that process is just extended into your editing. if you have no creative vision, editing won’t help you much. right?
some might say “keep telling yourself that”. i will, thank you very much.
my unprofessional opinion counts because this is my blog post.
The College Of Digital Photography has a fantastic website and informative newsletter that goes out monthly. I noted with interest and article on their site about Still Life Photography by Frank Krummacher that is a must read.
Apart from some fantastic pictures, Frank also goes on to explain how taking Still Life photographs need not require complicated of expensive equipment. He also goes through some of the lighting techniques used. The tips he shares are great whether you are a complete novice to this genre or just need some inspiration. Check out the article and just maybe you will find yourself wanting to learn a bit more like I did.
So four weeks have raced past since I last made mention my new adventure into studio photography. In that time I have been sick (but I still attended the class each Tuesday evening) and I have had to travel to Cape Town and Durban to conduct training. Its been busy.
So finally on Saturday afternoon I was able to arrange to borrow some light and spent so time yesterday shooting odd object in the house and just generally trying to apply some of the things I have learnt. The gallery below has some of the images I took yesterday.
Tomorrow night is the final class. As a group we will have to work out and shoot Still Life, Commercial and Portrait images while the lecturers look on. It is a tad nerve racking. I will say though, that this has been well work the time and effort. I have read a lot of photography books but some things are just beast learnt in person. If you are based in Johannesburg and want to give the course a go, head on over to The College of Digital Photography website for further info.
Here is hoping for the best for tomorrow. In the meantime I think the picture above best describes by experiences so far.
I have a confession to make. I have been doing something photographically related since I was in primary school and in that time I have tried my hand at photographing Wildlife, Landscapes, Macro, Still Life, Sports etc, but there is one thing I have yearned to learn more about and try more seriously, and that is working in a studio.
I am not saying I have never used studio lights before, I have, but back then I was shooting film and I wasn’t going to take a chance. I shot two events with two lights at 45 degree angles, metered carefully and never wasting a shot, but that is the some total of my life and studio lights.
So now after years of dreaming, I am finally going to be attending a Studio Photography course. I missed out last weeks lesson due to some poor planning on my side so this week will be a double hitter. Tomorrow night I will be having Lesson 2 at the College of Digital Photography, Saxonwold Campus and then Wednesday will be catching up Lesson 1.
I hope to keep you all posted with my progress and should even be able to let you see my progress as the next few weeks unfold. Cross fingers, hold thumbs etc.
