Sony SLT-A77 Advert

The July 2011 issue of PhotoComment Magazine is live on our site as well as hitting the shelves of stockists throughout this week. Here is a breakdown of what you can find inside. Don’t forget you can buy a postage paid subscription of the print magazine if they running off of shelves faster than you can get to them.

Meet The New Editor

You may have seen his portfolio and cover image in the April 2011 issue, and last month his image was on the cover again following his review of the Fujifilm Finepix X100. This issue is the first of what we hope to be many more for Armani Quintas our new magazine editor. From this founding father, a big “Welcome Aboard”.

A few months ago when the X100 was first announced , I immediately became very excited. Despite being of a completely different generation to when rangefinders were commonplace, I love their simplicity and style of shooting. In the modern world of DSLR’s and digital compacts, rangefinders are becoming scarce. Due to the nature of how a rangefinder works, today’s method of trigger happy shooting where just holding down the shutter button to take hundreds of photos, hoping at least one will be a “keeper,” isn’t encouraged. Composition requires effort and focusing requires time. Because time is taken, it forces the user to think hard about shooting and usually the result is better photos. Continue reading »

So, as you will have spotted by now, last night I attended the South African launch of the Fuji 2011 lineup and there making its first appearance on our shores was a sample of the Fuji FinePix X100. Choosing to let the crowds go first I waited till near the end of the evening to get some solo time with the camera and thought I could share with you my first impressions of it. We hope to get to do a full review of it soon.

Last night I attended the South African launch of the Fuji 2011 line up. I wont go into many of the details of the cameras as we have covered them when they were announced worldwide earlier this year. What I would like to do is highlight the models that grabbed my attention and why.

FinePix XP30

This model is hailed by Fuji as the first waterproof camera with GPS and its about time. I would have thought manufactures would know that people buying this camera are more likely to want the GPS than the consumers for some of the other cameras that have had this feature.

23:40 – After the Launch

Home safely and by waiting until almost the end of the event I got to play with the X100 a little bit and take some pictures with it. Will do a full report in the morning.

20:30 – HS20 plus the rest of the range

The HS20 is a big zoom camera that looks to be very exciting, for those who don’t want a system like a DSLR but do want the big zoom that would cost a fortune on a DSLR.

20:23 – The X100

According to Fuji they want everyone to experience the X100. Some good points about optical viewfinder benefits and the hybrid viewfinder. This is the camera that I am most excited about. Hopefully we can beat the crowds and get our hands on it.

Love the picture of a classical rollieflex twin lens camera to illustrate depth of field.

Lots of talk about new Film Simulation mode so you can make your images look like Fuji Velvia for example. Very cool.

You can also choose the camera sound for quiet Leica like or to DSLR mirror… Why?

20:15 – History of Fujifilm Digital

It’s 8pm and we are being briefed on the 2011 lineup of Fujifilm digital cameras here. Lots of talk about their real photo technology and the new 3D cameras. The slogan, “shoot 3D, view 3D and share 3D” which is where the limitations have been on 3D. Will update with more information as we come to the end.

This evening is a launch event for Fujifilm here in South Africa. It is sure to be interesting and while the invite had a picture of the above X100 there is nothing to say with the shortage of supply on this model that we will get to play with it this evening, but a man can dream can’t he? I will try and update you all from the event this evening.

With the announcement of the Fujifilm HS20 (and my father in law talking of getting a camera to replace his old Minolta SLR) I thought I would pop into Foto First and see what was happening with the HS10.

A price drop to R4599.00. That’s entry level DSLR money for a 30x Optical zoom in a manual zoom SLR like mechanism. That a whopping 24-720mm. The camera handles like a small DSLR with my only complaint being the smallish electronic viewfinder. All in all a good buy if you’re thinking entry level DSLR but the thought of a bag full of lenses is a bit overwhelming. Plus where on a DSLR will you find a 720mm lens for less than a car?

Update: I have just received an email informing me that this deal includes a Velbon Monopod and a camera bag. Just to increase its appeal.

Thats correct 15 new Fuji digital cameras and we are still waiting for the FinePix X100 coming out later this year. So excuse this rather brief summary of all the models kicking of at the top and working down to the bottom models.

FinePix HS20 EXR

The new king of the hill which is taking over from the HS10, features a 16MP EXR CMOS Sensor and a large 3-inch 460k screen. It has the same 30x Zoom from 24-720mm, 1080p HD Video, 7.6fps RAW capture… does one really need an SLR any more?

FinePix F550 EXR with GPS and F500 EXR

Bar the GPS and RAW capabilities of the F550, both these cameras are identical with the new 16MP EXR CMOS sensor 15x Zoom 1080p HD Video and 8fps.

FinePix XP30

This little waterproof and rugged camera goes to a depth of 5 meters and shock proof to 1.5 meters. With a 5x Zoom, 14MP sensor and now GPS this is a fantastic little camera. It is event said to be freeze proof to -10 degrees.

FinePix S3200 and S4000

With 14MP sensors, 720p Video and 3inch screens the only differ3ence is the one has 24x zoom and the other a 30x.

FinePix Z90

14MP, 5x (28-140mm) zoom and a 3inch touch screen, all in all a  refined improvement over the previous Z70

FinePix T200

This 14MP camera is claiming to be the thinnest 10x zoom on the market to date.

FinePix S2950

14MP with a 18x zoom, this is more a refresher of a previous model than anything else.

FinePix JV200, JX300 and JX350

The top of this lot is the JV200 with 16MP and 5x zoom. The other two drop to 14MP and 5x zoom on the JX300 while the JX350 gets a shorter 3x optical zoom.

And finally the FinePix AV200, AV250, AX350

The AV200 gives 14MP while the AV250 is 16MP both with 3x zooms, the AX350 is 16MP and with a 5x optical zoom.

We’re not sure if the feeling is unique to us – though we doubt it – but it seems that each year Christmas feels a little less… Christmaslike than the year before.

We’ve teamed up with Foto First and Fujifilm South Africa to bring you a new competition over this festive season where you could win a Fuji FinePix AV110 and R500.00 Foto First Printing Voucher.
