The last couple of weeks have been terrible since we got samples of both the NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 but were sworn to secrecy as – at the time – there was no official release date for either camera. Now the news is official and we can share our first thoughts and begin our reviews a little more publicly.

You see that picture above, its not a Photoshop job, its the Nikon D5100 in the wild. We managed to be in a camera shop the same time the product manager brought it round for the guys to check out. So what are my first impression on it?

This morning we wake to the news that Nikon have unveiled the new D5100 and ME-1 Mic. The D5100 will obviously replace the old D5000 – which to be honest was not a favourite of mine personally – and sports a 16.2MP CMOS sensor as found in the D7000. Nikon have improved the flip-out and rotating screen by moving its hinge to the side like the Canon EOS 60D and 600D rather than at the bottom of the camera as was the case with the old D5000.

The ME-1 Mic is compatible with all Nikon’s (though it is likely to work on other brands) which accept a Mic through the standard audio jack. Nikon also have announce the production of their 60 millionth Nikkor lens. Full press release after the break.

Samsung have anounced ahead of CES 2011 (Consumer Electronics Show) the replacement of their NX10, the Samsung NX11.

We got to play with the NX10 a little bit earlier in the year and found it to be a tad sluggish or uncertain of itself in terms of autofocus. That said the images were clean. Expect a lot more CES news as the show opens next week.

Panasonic have today announced the new DMC-GF2, the successor to the GF1 which we reviewed back in our June 2010 is of PhotoComment Magazine. Featuring a 12mp CMOS sensor this body is 19% smaller and 7% lighter than the GF1 was. Panasonic also put a Touch Screen on the back, made sure its shoots Full HD Video and is compatible with the new 3D lens which was seen at Photokina.

All in all this looks like a great upgrade and we are eager to get our hands on it, particularly if the AF is as improved in speed and accuracy as they say it is. Full press release from Panasonic after the break.

Lomography, the art of having fun when taking pictures using dated technology called Film! The new Sprocket Rocket could – for me at least – be one of the most exciting Lomography cameras released to date. A 35mm Panoramic camera that is engineered to expose your film right to the very edges, even over the film advance sprocket holes (hence the name). Previously to get this effect I had to adapt my old Voigtlander Bessa 6x9cm medium format cameras. Read on for the official Press Release.

Sony has introduced a new range of SLT cameras, the A33 & A55. SLT stands for Sinlge Lens Transluscnet. These cameras feature a transluscent mirror. This means that the mirror doesn’t move when you take a picture, the picture is transmitted through the mirror to the sensor. What does this mean in real life? Well the point I am focusing on in this post is the speed priority mode. In this mode you are able to shoot 10, yes thats right ten frames per second.

Here is a video you may already have watched in our post on the Sony Press Conference here at Photokina, if not take look at the difference between 3fps and 10fps, if you have already watched watch it again it’s pretty cool!

Here is a series of still I shot today on Sony’s stand at Photokina 2010. There are 26 shot in this sequence shot at 10 frames per second. The only reason I had to stop was that I was using a slower memory as my fast card was already full of other stuff. But the important thing to note here is that you are only limited by the speed of your card when shooting in high speed, the faster your card the more shots you get. In an ideal world where we could fast enough cards you could probably shoots 10fps all day.

Ok, this picture of a sunrise is not a German or London sunrise, it still a South African sunrise. Yesterday afternoon we arrived at the airport for our flight to London only to find the flight was delayed for almost 12 hours. So here we are, at the airport waiting to board our plane.

As Greg says, the plane, the sunrise and hot chocolate makes for a perfect picture, except that its not in London.

The itinerary now is arrive in London, rush to make arrangement to get to Germany (we will have missed our train) and hopefully make it to Photokina before the Sony Press Conference. We will keep you posted. What would life be like without a little bit of excitement?

(Picture taken at OR Tambo International Airport with the new Sony Alpha A580, 18-250mm lens using Auto HDR [High Dynamic Range] at 3 EV stop setting)

If you missed it, earlier this week Nikon announced a few new products including the replacement for the very popular D90, the Nikon D7000. We had the chance to put our hands on a sample for a few minutes and all I can say is “Impressive!” In fact, my palm is itching for switching personally.

In summary, the D7000 has a 16mp APS-C sized CMOS sensor. It shoots Full HD 1080p 24 frames per second. When you add the dual SD Card slots and magnesium body that feels as robust as the D300s and you start thinking this camera is fighting for a bigger label than ‘serious amateur’s camera’.

Pentax have unveiled the new Pentax K-r which in many ways is a scaled back K-7. Featuring a 12mp CMOS Sensor it can shoot at 6 frames per second and shoots HD video.

They have also announced a new DA L 35mm f/2.4 lens.

In terms of compact cameras there is the Optio RZ10 with a 14mp CCD, 10x Zoom and HD Video. The RS1000 has a 28-110mm zoom, 14mp CCD, HD video and changable covers for the camera. Yes thats right, you can skin your Optio.
